Summary of the Presentation:
The presentation will cover sexual assault from three different perspectives: from the point of view of the victim/survivor, prosecutor and Judge. Also covered in the presentation will be myths/misconceptions of sexual assault, rape culture, difficulties in prosecution of cases, including discussion of actual cases and disparity in sentencing. Judge Medina will share her own personal experience as a 29-year rape/stalking survivor.

Judge Medina presented for IBTSA in December of 2020. This training will give a short summary of the previous training. You are not required to have attended the training in December 2020 to attend this training.
Presenter:
Judge Julie L. Medina is an Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Corrections. Previously, Julie worked as a prosecutor and lead attorney for 11 years in the Domestic Violence Unit for the Douglas County Attorney’s Office in Omaha, Nebraska, prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Julie earned her J.D. from Creighton University School of Law. While at Creighton Law, she began her Speak Out program, which among other things earned her the Outstanding Service to the Law School award. Julie has presented her program to over eighteen thousand individuals including college, high school and middle school students, teachers, nurses, doctors, attorneys and legal professionals in Nebraska and Iowa. Her teaching experience includes co-teaching a Violence in America class at Creighton University, co-teaching a domestic violence elective for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, training advocates and hotline volunteers for the YWCA/WCA, training new recruits for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and Omaha Police Department and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners for Methodist Hospital. She has been awarded for her work including receiving the Tribute to Women Award. Julie is a survivor of sexual assault and she tells her personal story as part of her Speak Out program. The Omaha World Herald, the Pixel Project, RAINN and the No More campaign have recognized her story locally, nationally, and internationally.
